I spent the morning birding around this reservoir north of Columbus, looking for migrant waterfowl and early landbirds, with modest success. The cold temps discouraged boaters (this is one of Ohio's most heavily-boated lakes), so the surface was clear for waterfowl. There just weren't that many. I stopped at the beach area, the dam, Plumb Road Acees, the Mountain Bike trail area, SummerRidge access, Berlin Station access, and the Cheshire causeway. Notables included:

Dabbling Ducks - small flocks out on the Lake, which usually means migrant flocks, included small #s of Gadwall, Wigeon, and Pintail

Diving Ducks - hardly any, except for a small flock of Bufflehead off the beach. I also had small flocks of Red-br.Mergansers off SummerRidge (20) and Berlin Station (6).

Other Waterbirds - 3 Horned Grebes remained along the Cheshire causeway

Raptors - nothing except a few Turkey Vultures

Gulls - still good numbers of Ring-bills, with around 400 on the beach and another 300+ on gravel bars at Berlin Station. Hardly anything else was with them other than a few Herring Gulls.

woodpeckers - still many Downies & Hairies at most stops with woods. A pileated was calling in the woods north of the Visitor's Center above the beach.

Phoebe - single birds were calling in the ravine at the Mountain Bike Trail (near New Galena) and along Berlin Station access

Horned Larks - 3-4 were skittering around the beach area

Yellow-rumped Warblers - 1-2 at nearly every stop; had 3 at the campground off Cheshire, where they often overwinter.

Field Sparrow - 1 was singing in the scrubby fields near the beach

Fox Sparrow - 1 was in a thicket near the lake-shore of the Plumb Rd access

Blackbirds - plenty of Redwings at nearly every stop, either on territory or as flyovers.

Finches - little other than a few Goldfinches and House Finches. No Purple Finches, despite this being a prime time and Alum Cr.Lake being a fairly good spot for migrants of this species.
