This morning about 9AM, Easter, while scouting for shorebird habitat along "The Berlin Lake Trail", we saw an unbelievable sight, a mass of black bodies in the water and in the trees; we counted no less than 520 Double-crested Cormorants. The location was at Berlin Reservoir in Portage County, southwest of the SR224 Causeway. If at the old railroad bridge on the trail, the birds were in and around the islands in the lake to the northwest. There is presently no shorebird habitat. The lake level, controlled by The Army Corps of Engineers, is presently very high and appears to be very close to summer recreation pool level, bad for shorebirding!
