Hello All... A lack of recent rains in S Wyandot and N Marion Counties, with a lack of resultant "sky ponds", may help to explain the low numbers and variety of expected waterfowl and shorebird migrants in these areas. Highlights of the KPWA include an almost "classic" Ross's Goose (two have been reported recently) on Pond 33 and also on the up-ground reservoir. One of these could be the same bird that was reported several times in this same area, a few weeks ago. An Osprey was also observed catching a fish and then perching in one of the dead trees on Pond 33 (just NE of the reservoir, and a much earlier "hotspot" for Red-headed Woodpeckers). I have seen Ospreys at this same pond/trees in past years, and think that this would be a great location for an Osprey nesting platform (NE side of the pond), and for public viewing of these magnificent birds.

Highlights at Big Island WA (about 8 miles S of KPWA, and along the LaRue-Prospect Road) included 8 species of expected waterfowl, many nesting Canada Geese (with at least 3 pairs with goslings), a pair of Bald Eagles, a nesting pair of Trumpeter Swans, and at least two calling American Bitterns (starting at about 5:30 PM). This area can perhaps be best observed by walking N on the wide, gassy dike that is easily accessed from the 3rd parking area W of Espyville Road. The impoundments on either side of this dike offer a nice variety of wetlands habitat as the water level in the one to the E is noticeably lower. Shorebird species in the Big Island area today included Killdeer, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpipers, Dunlin, W Snipe, and a Solitary Sandpiper.

Good Birding!
Dan
