Bird parents,
As of this afternoon, one of the young Perry County Great horned owls
had fledged, and one remained on the nest (along with what was left of a
raccoon). We played the owl begging tape, and got an immediate response
from about 100 yards away, so we concluded that the young owl was nearby
and OK. No telling how long its sibling will stay around, but it could
live off that raccoon for quite a while, in my opinion.

These owls were visited by about a dozen birders, with more coming
tomorrow. It has been a real treat for everyone who got to see them.

I was saddened to see even one of them gone today, so I know I'll miss
both of them. We are hopeful that the whole thing plays out again next
year and perhaps even longer. And don't forget, there are Barred owls in
my yard and I've located a Screech owl nest cavity in a friends yard
nearby.
