Please join Columbus Audubon (all guests welcomed) at the Grange
Insurance Audubon Center at 505 West Whittier Street at 7:00 PM on Tuesday,
April 24th as they welcome Dr. David Brandenburg, author of the critically
acclaimed and downright spectacular National Wildlife Federation Field Guide
to Wildflowers of North America. This guide, published in April 2010, has
been hailed by reviewers and naturalists alike. It covers 49 of the United
States and all of Canada, and was written over several years while Dr.
Brandenburg compiled his research and plant information. David says, "It is
not like any seen before, the first field guide with national maps,
representative photos depicting plant variations, and an introduced species
section. I made it so a layman could see a range of colors and variations of
plant parts."

David Brandenburg is the on-staff botanist at The Dawes Arboretum in
Newark, Ohio. The living museum of trees and shrubs on 18,000 acres was
started in 1929. Dr. Brandenburg has been in botany for 40 years, half that
time at The Dawes Arboretum. A native of Ohio, he started his career at the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, then did field work with native plants at the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources.

Before the presentation, David will share an exhibit of dried pressed
plants from The Dawes Arboretum collection. He will be available to sign
copies of his book, which will be available for sale in the GIAC Nature
Store.

The Columbus Audubon Short (15 minute) Program will be given by Tom
Sheley and the topic is Sneak Peak at Wood Warblers. While 15 minutes is
hardly time to touch this subject, Tom will whet your appetite on a subject
near and dear to him. And Tom Sheley is the May 22 Columbus Audubon program
speaker. You won't want to miss this program!!

Saturday May 19, Columbus Audubon will meet at The Dawes Arboretum for
a special tour by Dr. Brandenburg. Please park and meet at the Horticulture
Complex (brown building) by no later than 8:30amET for an off-trail
wildflower walk. Bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks to enjoy back at
the main building for lunch. Afterward, Conservation Director Lori Totman
will take everyone on a tour of the new Dutch Fork Wetland Area. And even
after the tour concludes, you are welcome to drive or hike around the Dawes
Arboretum and let your senses amaze you. The Arboretum is located at 7770
Jacksontown Road SE in Newark. For more information, contact Darlene Sillick
at [log in to unmask] or 614.288.3696.
