In answer to Kathleen's question,

Based upon USFWS data from towers cited by it seems birds are more confused
by steady lights than strobes:

http://www.abcbirds.org/abcprograms/policy/collisions/towers.html

It is a bit of a stretch to apply the same to camera flashes, but the fact
that the birds don't spook from a flash says something.

Personally I think the equipment is too big and blocks the boardwalk. I
make like an immovable object when someone with a big camera rig is trying
to push through. Easy for me being large and hulking, and amusing when
they bounce off.
