Greetings all -

I've received several inquiries for Haans contact information about the Stygian Owl, enough to necessitate information before folks drive four hours to the peak of Gildersleeve Mountain in Kirtland (a very real and present mountain). While it would not surprise me in the least that Haans would actually have high tech night vision goggles and gear, it saddens me to have to bust this excellent prank wide open by requesting that birders once again check today's date as well as do a proper literature search on Stygian Owl, an exceedingly, exceedingly accidental-in-the-extreme-southern-border-states central and south american species of owl.

That being said, there is no Stygian Owl in NE Ohio. A well-written piece by Haans, though. Looks like Haans beat Jim McCormac to it. What was it several years ago? Brown Booby on an inland reservoir in western Ohio on April 1st? Jim didn't use night vision on that one, though...

Best of birding-

JB
