Greetings -

Jerry Talkington reports a Cerulean and Kentucky Warbler as highlights from Headlands Beach State Park this morning. Farther to the west, SSW stirred a great movement of raptors today along the Cleveland lakefront. I conducted an hour-long hawk watch from Edgewater/Battery Park and had 320+ Broad-winged Hawks, 2 Osprey, 50+ Sharp-shinned Hawks, and a Northern Harrier, before leaving to track down migrant songbirds. Wendy Park was simply loaded with sparrows, with the highlight being a single GRASSHOPPER Sparrow. Totals included 200+ White-throated, 220+ White-crowned, 50 Savannah, 10 Chipping, 5 Field, 30 Song, 3 Swamp, and 2 Lincoln's. A Fox Sparrow at Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve brought the day's sparrow total to 10 species.

From Huntington Reservation east to Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve, lakefront hotspots are showing good numbers of Warbling Vireos, Baltimore Orioles, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Yellow and Yellow-rumped Warblers, and a new influx of Palm Warblers. Swallow migration was incredible today with over 2,000+ Barns passing in an hour over Edgewater, hundreds of Rough-winged and Tree Swallows and dozens of Bank Swallows. Blue Jay migration was strong all through the day, with steady streams early in the afternoon; the largest flocks totally 40 to 60 at a time.

As noted by many sources including woodcreeper.com, Kenn Kaufmann and Mark Shieldcastle, Wednesday is looking great for a large drop in of new migrants across northern Ohio.

Best of birding-
