Hey Sorry about the huge delay in getting photos out. I spent the entire day from 8am - 8pm at Hoover Reservoir. I was trying refind the bird after it vanished behind a boat, MOST EXASPERATING! All it did was walk behind a docked boat and disappear. I'm not sure, but there is a chance it might've been the bird Bill Whan discussed in his post, timing seems about right, since I first saw it around 12:00 and it disappeared sometime around 1. Several other observers were able to see it too before it got away.I got some decent digiscope photos showing many field marks, but other cues observed included the all greenish yellow legs(in photos), dark iris(in photos), darker mantle (photos), orange-reddish eyering (barely seen), Under primaries were dark with two white wing spots (spots/mirrors seen in several of the photos). It just seemed bigger than expected, noticeably smaller than Herring, bigger than Ring-billed. The only hesitation I have in calling it a California Gull is my lack of experience with this species in the field. It was a bird I wondered if I'd ever actually see in Ohio due to its very transient nature. I've seen them in Colorado 6 years ago! I've studied them much in books and photos, but there are two races and that might've been throwing me off...perhaps it was of the Northern Great Plains race or something which average larger than Great Basin. The photos are here for now in an album on Facebook, this is a public link, so you can view it without being a member of Facebook (allegedly, though some people have trouble with this I guess, I'm sorry) <http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.593126848530.2054998.164901416&type=1&l=60ecd9f19d>
I will try and get it in my flickr acct. later this evening. If you are a friend on FB you can comment, but all other comments can be made to my aol account here. Thank you for your input.
Good Birding:
Ben Warner
