I checked three lakes in eastern Mahoning Co. yesterday 3/31.  Ruddy ducks were present in good numbers, and some other fowl were hanging out with them.  The Yellow Creek outlet at the north end of Pine L. has some nice shorebird habitat.  Even usually-boring Hamilton L. had some action, with 2 n. shovelers and 75 ruddy ducks there.  At Evans L.: 6 gadwalls, 2 blue-winged teal, 5 n. shovelers, 20 lesser scaup, 8 buffleheads, 50 red-breasted mergansers, 650 ruddy ducks, c. loon, 8 pied-billed grebes, horned grebe, 18 double-crested cormorants, bald eagle, 20 Am. coots, and 6 Bonaparte's gulls.  On and around Pine L. were: canvasback, 2 ring-necked ducks, 11 lesser scaup, bufflehead, 15 red-breasted mergansers, 500 ruddy ducks, 6 c. loons, horned grebe, 45 double-crested cormorants, bald eagle (on nest), n. harrier, Am. coots, killdeer, 20 Wilson's snipe, Bonaparte's gull, belted kingfisher, tree swallows, Carolina wren, n. mockingbird, and swamp
sparrow.  I was hoping to see long-tailed duck(s), but no luck.  This is prime time to look for them at inland lakes.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
