Hey Birders,

On Saturday, 3/31, the Ornithology Club at OSU birded Greenlawn Cemetery (Franklin co., SW side of Columbus) during the morning. This week, the Ornithology Class at OSU held outdoor lab at Greenlawn, which entailed two hours of birding on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.

Throughout the week, we totaled 54 species...pretty good for a cemetery in the shadows of skyscrapers! If anyone in central Ohio is still trying to track down lingering winter residents, or the early temperate migrants before they move on...head to Greenlawn! Out of our 54 species, here are some highlights:

Great Egret -flyovers this morning
Osprey - flyover on Monday and Wednesday, heading towards the Scioto River
Bald Eagle - immature flyover Monday morning
*Probable Merlin* - TA Tony Fries had a very brief glance at a probable Merlin on Monday morning. Possibly on it's way out from wintering here.
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 2-3 every morning
Brown Creeper - 3-5 each day
Winter Wren - the class had great views of a bird only this morning in the ravine; foraging right in front of us
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - heard on Wednesday
Golden-crowned Kinglet - gradual decline, from more than ten on Saturday to only 1 today
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - a small but noticeable increase throughout the week, from only hearing one on Saturday and Monday to seeing and hearing at least two at the end of the week
Northern Mockingbird - seen all week in different areas generall near and west of the admin office
Brown Thrasher - a pair was seen in the ravine on Wednesday
Pine Warbler - seen and heard throughout the week, with two breeding-plumage males seen very well today, near the pit
Yellow-rumped Warbler - seen in small numbers throughout the week
Yellow-throated Warbler - male seen well on Saturday in the ravine...this was actually an eBird rarity in Franklin co. for this date (3/31)
Fox Sparrow - numbers have dropped considerably in the last two weeks...only sighting was this morning in the ravine
White-crowned Sparrow - seen briefly at the feeders and in the trees around the pond on Wednesday
Pine Siskin - reliable throughout the week, usually near the pit, sometimes on the thistle feeders
...plus all of the usual suspects, which is always a good group at Greenlawn.

Good Birding,
Alex Hughes
