I'm not a waterfowl expert but I can't seem to ID what looks like a relatively common duck. I had 2 field guides , my old Petersons and a National Geographic and I couldn't match it. 
Dark brown head and neck, lighter brown body with darker brown near the tail and white under the tail, no white on the sides. The bill was dark. It was with a female that closely resembled a mallard but with no wing bars.
