Arrived behind the post office in Kidron between 4:00 & 4:30 pm looking for
Eurasian-collared Doves (ECDO) previously reported. Little activity until
5:00 to 5:30 pm except for hearing ECDO song & the growling call
occasionally, but could not find the birds. Song & call seemed to come
from behind the commercial building south of the post office. I checked
there but could not find ECDO until about 5 pm, when the amorous pair
appeared in trees in the next yard behind the building south of the post
office behind a row of pines. The singing (coo cooooo coo) male was
chasing the apparent female, which was carrying nesting material.
Meanwhile there was a mated pair of Mourning Doves with singing and
chasing. Quite lovey dovey behind the post office in Kidron! Between 6:15
& 6:22, the Western Meadowlark sang 4 to 6 times north of the bike path
east of West Lebanon Road beyond the bridge and near the 8.5 sign about one
quarter mile from bike path parking area on W Lebanon Rd. The bird was far
out in the fields perhaps close to the farm. However, the pipe organ
quality of its song was apparent. This location is north of Rt 30 at the
eastern edge of Dalton. See directions from Dan Sanders' previous post in
the archives.
