At 11:04AM this morning, Easter, Ryan Golterman, while looking for the previously reported male Eurasian Wigeon, found an adult Red-throated Loon in winter plumage at Guilford Lake in Columbiana County. Shortly after, he found his Life Bird quarry, the Eurasian Wigeon. He contacted us immediately, but due to Easter obligations, we were unable to confirm the wonderful find till 3PM. Upon our departure at about 4:15PM, the Red-throated Loon was still visible directly across the lake, looking north from the Mark's Landing parking area. This viewing location is accessed off of SR172, on the south side of the lake. Guilford Lake State Park is 396 acres of water, with plenty of public shoreline for great viewing. A spotting scope is recommended. On an interesting note; tomorrow April 9th, is the one year anniversary of Ryan finding the Western Grebe at Evans Lake in Mahoning County, a short drive to the northeast. On the following day, Sunday April 10th, four great species including the Western Grebe were seen by many at the Evans Lake location. The others were Red-necked Grebe, American White Pelican, and last, but not least, Red-throated Loon. It is that time of year!
