For those interested, an update of the bird species seen in Franklin
County through the end of April is on the Columbus Audubon Society site
at
http://columbusaudubon.org/production/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=777&Itemid=238
. We are well ahead of last year's accumulation by this date, with
213 species. This includes eight species (four gulls!) we didn't see at
all last year. I hope observers will keep us informed on additions to
this list through 2012.
I imagine many of Ohio's other counties would have roughly similar
numbers on their lists if they compiled reports such as this. Franklin
County certainly has no habitats exotic in Ohio, like lakeside marshes,
fens, large beaches and dunes, hemlock glens, large tracts of mature
hardwoods, etc., for which we compensate mostly with large numbers of
skilled reporters. Anyway, this gives you and idea of how many species
you might see here by the end of April if you were very active.
