We visited The Conneaut Sandspit today from 11:30AM To 12:30PM for lunch at the beach. It was about 60 degrees and extremely windy. The water level of Lake Erie seemed super high; with no sandbars visible, and no exposed shoreline in the Platform Lagoon Area. The highlight was 47+ Caspian Terns resting and calling on the beach. Amazingly the only shorebird was a lone Greater Yellowlegs. On one of the big rocks in the lagoon was a male Bufflehead peacefully resting, the purple hue on his head was shining. Some of the other guests hanging out on the sandspit were twenty plus Turkey Vultures, four Bonaparte's Gulls, two Great Black-backed Gulls, the usual numerous Herring and Ring-billed Gulls, and Northern Rough-winged Swallows, also resting on the sand. The only activity in the harbor were Double-crested Cormorants, juvenile Bald Eagles, and a Belted Kingfisher. The lack of shorebirds during our visit was surprising.
