The north pool at Darby MP was pretty quiet, despite a recent dearth of
rain. The grassland had plenty of singing dickcissels and grasshopper
sparrows, and probably lots of silent hungry ticks. The pool was nearly
full, with the expected common waterfowl as well as a very late-abiding
horned grebe in breeding plumage and a few yellowlegs. This water is not
deep, as yellowlegs have been foraging over most of it over the past
month; only a bit more dry weather, such as is predicted for the coming
week, will invite shorebirds as it did last year. Except for waders, the
county has a great 2012 list thus far.
