I continue to correspond with my British friend, now living and birding
in China, about his planned article on Big Days. We agree that the idea
of Big Days originated in Oberlin, Ohio in the 1890s. He knows that
Lynds Jones and W. L. Dawson kept county lists of species during a year,
but wonders if anyone in Oberlin has ever purposely done a competitive
Big Year in Oberlin, or in Lorain County, and what the total number of
species was. If I can get a link to his forthcoming article on Big Days,
I will send it to readers of this list. Oh, one more thing---does anyone
have access to a clear portrait of William Leon Dawson?

Hi Bill,

I prefer the anecdotal style myselF. If you ever find a clear portrait
photograph of Dawson, please send it on to me!

BTW, Oberlin City is certainly the home of Big Days but how about Big
Years?
J&D kept county lists of the number of species found in a year but has
anybody ever done a solo Big Year within Oberlin? If so, I wonder what
the total was.
Last year, I did a Big Year by bicycle and managed 150 self-found
species here in Gifu City.

Thanks again.

Rob.
