Hi,

For most of my life, Barred Owls were the predominant species here on
Gildersleeve Mountain in Kirtland.  Great Horned Owls were a bird I had to
go somewhere else to find.  That changed in 2006 when about 40 acres were
selectively logged and the following years the GHOWs began using an old
Red-tail nest.

Since then I never heard both the Barred and Great Horned in the same time
frame on proximity.  That has changed this spring.  I am hearing both in
the same night and while the Great Horned is to the north by the nest site,
the Barreds are all over.  Near and far.  Last night two distinct large
groups of Barreds began doing a choir at the same time.  This was 2
distinct groups of more than a dozen total.  One group near one far.  About
an hour later the Great Horned started up again.

I did not mind being awakened by all of this commotion but can only wonder
if this is some sort of interaction between the 2 species and if so what
could that be?
