Most Ohio birders are aware that there is an outstanding spring migration along Lake Erie in the northwestern part of the state. This has been known to North American birders, in a general way, for decades. But for the last seven years, staff and volunteers of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) have been working to connect all the dots: enhancing the experience for visiting birders; making local businesses and government agencies aware of the economic value of birding; and convincing the public that bird conservation is ultimately good for the economy.

These efforts are now resulting in major benefits to birds, birders, and local communities throughout northwest Ohio, and they're reflected in the great media coverage being given to BSBO's "Biggest Week In American Birding." Birds have been on the front page of most newspapers in the region during the last week, and today's top-of-the-front-page story in the Toledo Blade is a great example. Here's a slightly more limited online version: http://www.toledoblade.com/local/2012/05/05/Birding-enthusiasts-flock-to-shores-of-Lake-Erie.html (In case that long URL wraps and doesn't work directly from your browser, here's a shortened version: http://bit.ly/KonsSv Stories in the Blade are not always archived for long, so you should look today if you're interested.)

The current situation in northwest Ohio is a major win-win for birds and people. Anyone interested in the connection between birding economics and conservation should take a close look at what the Black Swamp Bird Observatory has been doing.
