Greetings all - Hope to see you this coming Saturday, the 23rd of June, for one of the coolest nature events of the summer: Bobolinks at Byer's Woods, sponsored by Ashland County Park District and the Greater Mohican Audubon Society. This premier birding and nature event is a major partnership between Ohio organizations looking to raise awareness for and protect grassland habitat for nesting Bobolinks at Byer's Woods. This event is a major "statement" to local government: birds = birders = support and conservation and education = business = conservation and education (the perfect circle). And we have a heck of a time stating it! Guided birdwalks by Tim Leslie and Jen Brumfield, Greg Miller (of The Big Year) and Su Snyder will be scoping Bobolinks and other key grassland species, and bug enthusiasts will get a kick out of the additional focus on dragonfly and damselfly and butterfly identification offered on the walks. The Ohio Ornithological Society will have a presence, as will Black Swamp Bird Observatory, who will also be lending their support by bringing their mobile store and a bus load of birders from NW Ohio. This event is AWESOME for young birders and young naturalists, too, (and everyone) who will get a kick out of the not-only-birding but "naturing" aspect of the event: we look for and at EVERYTHING, celebrating the diversity of Byer's Woods ecosystems and native flora and fauna. There's a great presentation by Dave Duncan, a well-known bee-keeper, crafts for kids, native plants for sale...and more. We have recently found territorial DICKCISSELS on the property. Join us for point-blank scope views of these brilliant western wanderers, Bobolinks, Savannah Sparrows, and so much more. It's personally one of my favorite events of the year as it is a day full of discovery, celebration of conservation, and photography, too. The half-day event runs from 9:30 to 1:30 p.m. SEE YOU THERE! FULL DETAILS BELOW: The Bobolinks have once again returned to Ashland County from their wintering grounds in Argentina. Come visit these charismatic grassland birds at an outdoor festival named in their honor. Ashland County Park District and the Greater Mohican Audubon Society continue to protect and promote the regionally endangered Bobolinks at Byer Woods, a popular park surrounding a capped off landfill at 671 County Road 1754 Ashland,OH 44805.Guided bird walk offered by Tim Leslie of Ashland Park District, spotting scopes manned by celebrity birder Greg Miller (of The Big Year) and Su Snyder, vendor booths, food sales and native plant sales are all a part of this popular event. Local Patch Birding- Jen Brumfield will also offer walks and feature her fabulous artwork.Black Swamp Bird Observatory will be lending their support to the conservation of Bobolinks by bringing their mobile store and a bus load of birders from the Oak Harbor area. Young people are encouraged to come out to learn more about the Ohio Young Birders, and active organization for youth interested in the natural world.Stucker Meadow, managed by Don Beam, will have a complete a selection of local native plants for sale. Enhance your landscape with native plants to increase the biodiversity of your home habitat.Well known bee-keeper, Dave Duncan will present information on pollinators at 12:30 pm. His product line of fine soaps and other products created for Bee-ology will also be available.Ashland County Park District will provide food service and “Crafts for Kids” will also be offered by park volunteer Kolleen Crall. The Ohio Ornithological Society will also have a promotional display on hand.Mark your calendar now and plan to attend June 23rd, 2012, from 9:00 am- 1:30 pm.
