I watched a pair of Purple finches building a nest in a Colorado blue spruce
in my yard today near Lucas,Richland Co.

This seems to be a late date for them to be nesting in this area, has anyone observed
similar activity with Purple finches lately?

Also present were 2 other singing males nearby that the paired male kept driving off
his territory.
He also was seen chasing away a nearby nesting male House finch (nest in Arborvitae)
and a male House sparrow (nest in woodpecker cavity-dead White birch).

Hopefully they will prevail in nesting with all the nearby competition.

Gary Cowell
