I have been doing surveys on the Lake Erie Bluffs property for a couple years. It is a great birding area with a lot of potential. Currently there are only trails north of Clark Road. Eventually there will be additional trails south of Clark. This area was logged off a few years ago and is very brushy. There are areas of open meadow, scrubby old field, and wet meadow. There is also a small beaver pond on the property. Last year with the wet weather there were at least a couple Wilson's snipe nests. They were here earlier in the spring, but the dry weather sent them moving. Other breeding birds of note found there over the last couple years are Virginia rail, yellow-bellied sapsucker, least flycatcher, alder flycatcher, willow flycatcher, white-eyed vireo, blue-winged warbler, mourning warbler, and yellow-breasted chat. Merlin nested not far from here a few years ago. It is an excellent place to observe migrating birds, both on land and water. There are plans for an observation deck along the shoreline that will great for doing lake surveys. Currently there is an opening with a couple benches that would be great for lake watching. The area north of Clark Road has a narrow strip of small trees along the bluff above the beach and is open brush in the remainder. It gives good open viewing of migrating raptors and songbirds. Last year I watched flickers passing through here one after another. Eventually one was picked off by a northern goshawk. So far, over 200 species of birds have been observed on or from the property. Birds of note so far are American bittern, northern goshawk, merlin, peregrine falcon, golden eagle, cave swallow, golden-winged warbler, and Connecticut warbler. This has also been a great place for migrating butterflies and dragonflies with some great sightings so far. Butterflies of note have been cloudless sulpher, little yellow, American snout, variegated fritillary, common ringlet, funereal duskywing, and common checkered skipper. The ringlet was a second state record.
