Greetings -
This year, Ohio birders have the INCREDIBLE opportunity to again take multiple pelagic birding trips on Lake Erie seeking rare migrant waterbirds such as jaegers, gulls, loons, grebes, waterfowl and more. Ohio leads the rest of the Great Lakes states in offering these awesome trips, between two groups, both Local Patch Birding and Black Swamp Bird Observatory, offering these brilliant opportunities to get offshore. Last year, all Local Patch Birding trips had mind-blowing looks at both Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers, loons, grebes, rare gulls and more. BSBO scored Pomarine Jaeger, Red-necked Grebe and much more. These are thrilling opportunities to seek rarities and discover fall migration on Lake Erie.
This year, Local Patch Birding is offering FIVE trips targeting all THREE species of jaegers: Long-tailed, Parasitic and Pomarine Jaeger. We've strategically designed these boat trips to cover an exceptionally productive area on the shallow Central Basin during peak rarity season: September, October and November. All Local Patch Birding pelagics depart Vermilion, Ohio, and visit Huron and Lorain Harbors - which offer some of the best opportunities to seek jaegers in Ohio.
Local Patch Birding trips for 2012 are nearly full already. Description below, details and registration:

LOCAL PATCH BIRDING ITINERARY:
We値l leave port in Vermilion and promptly head west towards Huron Harbor to appreciate the congregations of waterfowl and gulls that stage off the harbor mouth and piers at this highly productive spot. Amidst the masses of gulls, we値l be on the lookout for migrant loons, grebes, scoters, JAEGERS, and other specialties. From Huron, we値l backtrack to the east. Weather dependent, we値l head out onto the lake upwards of 9 (NINE) miles offshore as we work our way east, ultimately visiting Lorain Harbor, where another large congregation of gulls and waterfowl should be staging. If Bonaparte痴 Gulls are massing, the chance for Little Gull and Black-legged Kittiwake will increase, and the breakwalls may hold the highly-sought Purple Sandpiper.JAEGERS are primary target birds on all tours. These fierce, powerful, falcon-like relatives of gulls are regular migrants on Erie, but are uncommonly seen by birders on shore. Between the harbors and the open waters of Erie, we値l search amongst groups of Common Loons for Red-throated, and within flocks of mergansers and scaup we値l be on the lookout for Long-tailed Duck and Black and Surf Scoters. All told, we値l cover 30+ miles by making an oval-shaped route from Vermilion to Huron, Huron to Lorain, and Lorain back to Vermilion.
