This morning, Sat., June 9, on Wagner Riffle Road between 4:00 to 4:30 am,
a Chuck-wills-widow was singing continuously, heard from the concrete edge
of the road at the Eulett Center entrance. The bird was south of this
entrance in the vicinity of the location of the previous Edge of Appalachia
(TNC) office where there is now a natural wood barn/garage on the right
hand side of Wagner Riffle just north of the fenced gravel parking area.
The Chuck was also heard easily from the barn & parking area. It was
beautiful at 4:00 am with clear skies, moon light from the half moon. I
tried for Chucks Friday night without success until about 11:00 pm at the
same location. On Cole Road northwest of Cedar Mills on TNC property at
the sharp left curve in Cole Road, I heard at least 3 Henslow's Sparrows
singing their clipped song. This is the traditional location for HESP at
The Edge of Appalachia in Adams County. Take 348 north to Cedar Mills,
left on Cedar Mills Rd to Cole. Also, 3 Northern Bobwhite calling their
name at the same location, two of them seen flying, one from the road
edge. The HESP & Bobwhites were observed just after 8:00 am at the Cole
Road location. Near the entrance to a private gravel lane off of Tater
Ridge Road in a large grassland north of Hull Road, there were at least two
more Henslow's Sparrows singinging at about 9:00 am and then again at about
10:30 am after a visit to Miller's Bakery. Three Red-headed
Woodpeckers, 2 on Murphin Ridge Road on poles along the road at the lumber
yard near intersection with Wheat Ridge Road and one along Rt 32 just east
of intersection with Tater Ridge Road.
