Bob Powell was in the Lost Bridge area. The bridge acoss the Greater Miami
River on the way to Shawnee Lookout Park is the bridge from which the good
shorebirds have been reported over the past three weeks or so. This
includes Western, Semipalmated, Solitary, Stilt, Baird's, Pectoral
Sandpipers, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs. The north side of this bridge
has been the best side for shorebirds, but two weeks ago, the south side
also had good shore bird habitat. For details see Cincinnatibirds.com.
The Little Blue Herons have been in the area of the bridge, but the shallow
impoundment that Bob Powell mentions on the south side of the road before
the bridge should also be checked. This area can be reached by taking I275
west to I74 and turn south on I275 toward Lawrenceburg, IN. Take the Kilby
Road exit, go east, turn right at the T, and proceed several miles to the
traffic light at Rt 50. Go south to the first traffic light in the small
town of Elizabethtown, Turn left at the light. This road crosses the
bridge and the passes the shallow impoundment on the right before reaching
the bridge. Do not park on the bridge. There is a small parking/turn
around area across the bridge on the left. Park here and walk out on the
bridge. The shorebirds can be scattered over an extesive area, so
patience and thorough scanning is highly recommended.
