Went to the BDGW, on Big Darby Creek Rd. where the old horse track is and
before the grain elevator location, parking at the gate on the right side
of the road. Spent about two hours there (5 - 7 a.m.) mostly within the
first 100 m. of the gate. Virginia Rails were present, giving their
"crreeeek" alarm call frequently, often in response my 'squeaking' and
'squealing" notes. As long as it was dark their calls were frequent but
at the first sign of dawn they became quiet and were silent after that.
This has been typical behavior this summer, almost all sounds were
strictly nocturnal. They seem to favor the large areas of cattail marsh.
And in the swale where they have been present most of July, up to three
Sedge Wrens sang infrequently from both sides of the rd.
