It was a day later than the radar suggested, but a burst of migrants reached the Hoover Nature Preserve this morning. I spent 5 hours roaming the north end of the reservoir, stopping at Oxbow Island, Mudhen Marsh, the Sunbury causeway, Eastside flats, the Galena Boardwalk, Wiese Rd flats, and Hoover Meadows. Landbird migration was good early in the morning, especially on Oxbow Island. Shorebirds were patchy, with the best flocks at the Wiese rd flats. Total for the morning was 82 species, with the following notables:

Teal - small flocks of Green-wings were at the Eastside flats and the boardwalk cormorants - increased #s, with nearly 200 scattered over the upper reservoir
Great Egrets - only 3 (all on flats off the boardwalk)
Green Herons - 2 at Oxbow Island
Osprey - still several around, including 3 at Oxbow Island
Bald Eagle - an adult was perched on an island north of the Sunbury causeway
Peregrine - flyby adult at Eastside flats spooked all the shorebirds there.

Shorebirds - Kildeer commonest (120), followed by Pectoral (60), Semipalmated Sandpipers (50) and Least (45). Also had Semipalm.Plover, Solitary, Spotted, L.Yellowlegs, Short-billed Dowitcher (1 at Wiese), Stilt Sandpiper (1 at Eastside), Baird's Sandpiper (1 at Eastside)

Gulls,Terns - no big flocks, but perhaps 80 Ring-bills total, plus 3 Herring and 5 Caspian Terns. Best was a molting Black Tern fishing off Wiese flats

Red-headed Woodpeckers - most stops had them, calling and squabbling; Eastside and Boardwalk had 3, Wiese 2, Oxbow 1.

Flycatchers - late movement of E.Kingbirds, with birds at Oxbow Island (2), Sunbury Causeway, and Wiese Rd. Also had Acadian at Wiese Rd. and a Willow at Hoover Meadows, along with Pewees and Great Crested.

Swallows - fair movement, mostly of Barn Swallows (high was 40 at Oxbow, but double digits at most stops). Also had Purple Martins at several stops, along with Cliff & Bank (Wiese flats & Boardwalk) and Tree (2 at Wiese flats)

Vireos - Warblings at Oxbow Island (3) and Sunbury causeway. Red-eyed at many stops, with 2-3 still singing at Mudhen marsh

Wrens,Gnatcatchers - House Wrens were common at many spots, topped by 6-8 at Hoover Meadows. Gnatcatchers were scattered over several spots.

Thrushes - hardly any, save for Robins and Bluebirds

Mimids - loads of Catbirds, topped by 12-14 at Mudhen marsh. Brown Thrashers included singles at Oxbow & Hoover Meadows, and 2 at Wiese Rd bikepath.

Cedar Waxwings - small flocks at most stops; a not-so-small group of 50 was at the tip of Oxbow Island.

Warblers - most were at Oxbow Island early, including Yellow (2), Tennessee, Prothonotary, Black&White, Black-thr.Blue (male), and Yellow-rumped (extremely early for this one). Common Yellowthroats were at Wiese and Hoover Meadows.

Buntings,Grosbeaks - Indigos were at Eastside flats and Hoover Meadows. I could find no grosbeaks yet.

Orioles - small flock of 6 Baltimores (3 males) was at Oxbow Island early, chattering and chasing one another.

Birds weren't the only attraction. Butterflies were also conspicuous on the Eastside flats, Wiese flats, and Hoover meadows, and included lots of Dainty Sulphurs, Fiery Skippers, Pearl Crescents, and Buckeyes, among others.
