Continuing with a day of adventure, my wife Denise and I, birded at Mosquito Creek State Wildlife Area in northeastern Trumbull County, from 3PM to 6PM this afternoon, Sunday. The mudflats at the north end of the reservoir, extend as far as you can see. There was a wonderful variety of birds! Best find was a Red-necked Phalarope, my second of the day, the earlier find was at The Conneaut Sandspit. Also adding excitement to our day, was 2 American Golden-Plovers and 6 Black-bellied Plovers. The other readily seen shorebirds were 6 Stilt Sandpipers, 50+ Semipalmated Plovers, 150+ Killdeer, 30+ Greater Yellowlegs, 60+ Lesser Yellowlegs, 3 Sanderlings, 40+ Semipalmated Sandpipers, 80+ Least Sandpipers, 50+ Pectoral Sandpipers, 12 Short-billed Dowitchers, and out of scope range were a lot more! Some of the other birds of interest were 100+ Green -winged Teal, 38 Great Egrets, 4 Bald Eagles, and at about 4:45PM, a Peregrine Falcon making the rounds and terrorizing all the shorebirds and Green-winged Teal. To reach the site, go north from SR88, on the west side of the lake, along Hoagland-Blackstub Road, turn right (east) on Mahan Denman Road till it reaches the water. Look left (to the northeast). A scope is necessary. A word of advice, everything north of Mahan Denman Road extended into the lake, is protected refuge, do not walk into this area or trespass!!!
