Yesterday 8/24 Ken Parsons and I kayaked the Mohican river from Ohio
SR 62 to the confuence with the Kokosing river. This ten mile stretch of
river seams to be the hang out for the eagles from multiple (at least five)
nests in the area. We saw 29 bald eagles. Ten were adults and the balance
were juviniles aged from this years hatch to four years old. We got many
very up close looks at the birds. We had to be very careful with the count
since many birds flushed and flew down river. One two year old in
particular flew ahead many times for about a five mile
distance.
Unfortunatly the small waterproof point and shoot camera I had with me
does not take good enough pictures to email. We were able to look at
eagles approx 60 times on this trip. Everything from perched as we went by
to flying right over our heads to high in the sky. I bounced off of a lot
of rocks while looking up through my binos. Good thing the water level is
down or I would have been turned over.
We also saw many great blue herons, belted king fishers and lots and
lots of cedar wax wings. The cedar wax wings were flying out over the
riffles picking off bugs. They seamed to only be around the riffles. I
wonder if there is a particular bug they like that is only found at the
riffles.
