On Thursday, Aug 2, at about 9:30 in the morning, an Amish birder heading out to the fields to work, was surprised to see a Swallow-tailed Kite circling at tree level quite close. He watched as the bird stayed in the same area for close to an hour. After 10 minutes the birder went to a phone and tried to call me (I was working in a building with no cell reception). He then contacted several other birders who eventually arrived at the location east of Holmesville in Holmes County. By then the kite had flown off to the west. Attempts to re-locate the bird were not successful. If it continued flying west, the kite would have passed close to the place where a Swallow-tailed Kite stayed from September 6-18, 1997.

I talked to the birder at length and there is no doubt about the accuracy of the sighting. I only wish I could have made the 10 minute drive to get some photos. Documentation will be submitted to the Bobolink, Ohio Cardinal and N.A. Birds.

Bruce
