I talked with authorities at Battelle Darby MP in Franklin Co today. I
have been advising folks who wanted to bird the pond in the SE corner to
park at the gravel pull-off just short of the entrance to the picnic
area, etc. Now I have learned that since that time there have been
problems at the site. Locals have always tended to zoom down the
straight stretch and lose control at the corner, especially recently if
someone's getting in or out of that pull-off; there have been four
accidents. At one time there were ten birders' cars parked there!
Sooooo, they are going to close vehicle access to that pull-off, (I
assume you can still walk there from the parking lot at the picnic area)
but within the next few days are going to mow a new path from the
grain-bins parking area out to the southeast pond, and sign it so
visitors don't get lost. This access is perfectly OK, not much longer,
and the new trail will prevent traffic accidents on the road. Please use
this route to the SE pond!
Other interesting news I gleaned: the Parks have bought that 150-acre
bean field that lies south of Kuhlwein Road, and adjacent to this
prairie section's north side. They will be pulling out drain tile, doing
some sculpting, and planting winter wheat to hold the soil till next
spring, whereupon this will be a further extension of restored prairie,
now more than a square mile of it, which will, in a hundred years or so,
contain a few oak mottes typical of this setting prehistorically. It
won't be large enough for prairie-chickens probably, but it will be
birdy. Get all your neighbors to vote for the next Parks levy..............
