Hi all,

I stopped in at Pipe Creek Wildlife Area in Sandusky for a bit yesterday, and was pleased to find lots of action. there are herons aplenty and I saw the the three immature Little Blue Herons reported here by Gabe Leidy back on July 29, as well as 12 Snowy Egrets, which Gabe also reported. I also saw Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, a Green Heron, and a Black-crowned Night-Heron. If someone were trying for a “Big Heron Day”, Pipe Creek would have to be on their A-List.

The big change since Gabe’s visit is the spike in numbers and diversity of shorebirds. The habitat in the northwest impoundment is fantastic, and birds are coming and going with some frequency. This will be a great place to keep a close eye on in the coming weeks. I tallied the following:

Semipalmated Plover - 2
Killdeer - 55
Spotted Sandpiper - 2
Solitary Sandpiper - 4
Greater Yellowlegs - 6
Lesser Yellowlegs - 95
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 14
Least Sandpiper - 60
Pectoral Sandpiper - 15
Stilt Sandpiper - 5
Short-billed Dowitcher – 25

I have photos of the habitat and some of the birds on my blog, and a map of Pipe Creek Wildlife Area: http://jimmccormac.blogspot.com/
