I dodged rain showers this morning to search for wetland birds around Pickerington Ponds and nearby areas (Chatterton Greenbelt and Portman Park). Despite the showers, this area is surprisingly dry; most of the wetlands at Pick Ponds are dry and grown-in with vegetation. Only Teal Pond and Ellis Pond have any significant water, and only the latter had many shorebirds. Nearby, Chatterton greenbelt also had some water in one of its impoundments, but didn't have anything different from Pick Ponds. Two hours of birding produced the following highlights:

Waterfowl - nothing but Canada geese, Wood Ducks, and Mallards
Shorebirds - Ellis had almost everything, including 50 Kildeer, 2 Semipalmated Plovers, 2 Solitary Sandpipers, 6 Lesser Yellowlegs, 10 Pectoral Sandpipers, as well as 40-50 birds that were too distant to ID. The East end needs an observation point.
Herons - nothing but Great Blues (16+). No Great Egrets, no Little Blues, no Plegadis Ibises
Yellow-billed Cuckoos - calling at both Chatterton greenbelt and Portman Park
Swallows - lots around Pick Ponds, topped by 50-60 Rough-wings, with much smaller #s of Barn, Bank, and Cliff.
Purple Martins - special mention for a flock of 15 around Ellis Pond, probably migrants
Flycatchers - slow day, with 2 E.Kingbirds (Ellis), 1 Acadian (Chatterton), and 1 Phoebe (Portman)
Thrushes - 2-3 Wood Thrushes were at Portman Park; unclear whether they were wanderers or early migrants
Warblers - only 1 migrant Yellow, but still lots of Common Yellowthroats singing on territories at Portman, Chatterton & Pick Ponds.
Blackbirds - unusually scarce, with only a small flock of 15-20 Redwings at Teal Pond in Pick Ponds.
Orioles - had 1 Baltimore at Portman Park early, but that was the only one.
