I returned to Dillon WA early this morning, and birded all the way from the dam westward to the wetland across from Black Hand Gorge. While trying to sort through the shorebirds at the Pleasant Valley access, I met Scott Allbaugh, who was kind enough to send an exact location to the Ohio listserv. Thanks, Scott.

The majority of the shorebirds this morning were evenly divided between solitary sandpipers (lots of juveniles!) and killdeer, with a couple lesser yellowlegs, pectoral sandpipers and least sandpipers thrown in the mix. Still nothing exotic, but this is great habitat and deserves daily checking.

When I first arrived, only one little blue was visible. However, eventually all six put in an appearance. Also had 6 bald eagles (1 adult; a 4th year; 1 hatch-year; 3 somewhere in between).

Checklists of all birds seen this morning:

Dillon Reservior – Dam area: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11248453

Dillon State Park – Beach area: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11248544

Dillon WA – Fisherman’s point on DNR Rd. #7: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11248573

Dillon WA – Pleasant Valley Rd. access (where the little blue herons are being seen): http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11248670

Dillon WA – Toboso Rd. access (Licking Co., across from Black Hand Gorge): http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11248716

In addition, as I was driving along DNR Road #7 along the very shallow reservoir, I observed 8 great egrets. This brought the total to 13 seen this morning. A few great egrets have over-summered at Dillon for several years, but I have to believe that some of these are migrating.

Also, this must have been a banner year for yellow-billed cuckoos. I’m seeing and hearing them everywhere. I had two immatures following an adult at the Toboso Rd. location.
