The vast flats at East shore of Hoover Reservoir (Delaware Co, just south of the town of Galena and Sunbury) proved interesting today with apparently the same adult BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, that Dave and I found on Saturday morning. Park at the entrance to the east-shore yacht club off of Sunbury Rd. near Hoover Meadows Preserve. The Buff-breasted likes to hang out on the main large peninsula that is past the yacht club area and Pelican Island in the fresh new short grass/sedge that is growing near a few rows of short willows and mixed rocks. The bird blends in with the rocks perfectly so careful searching is required. The Baird's likes the inlet just north of this area and the outer shore of the peninsula (the one that usually has gulls and Caspian terns out on it, just north of the larger bay/inlet. A lot of Killdeer are also out there with the Buffy and they all flush pretty easily so try not to approach too closely and scope really helps. There are a good mix of the usual suspect shorebirds plus one Short-billed Dowitcher adult.
Good Birding,
- Ben Warner
