Greetings, Dave Clark found and photographed a non-breeding plumaged phalarope at Pipe Creek on Tuesday. He posted many photos to the Birding Ohio Facebook page. At a distance, in the photos, the bird appeared wholesomely pale gray above (lacking "braces" of any kind), black-naped, with a dark eye spot. Confusion with Red-necked Phalarope is very possible, but multiple photos posted appear to show the thicker, blunter bill, heavy chest and thick body of a Red Phalarope. Jim McCormac and Kenn Kaufman commented on Dave's photos. This is somewhat exceptionally early for this species but certainly not unprecedented. Most Ohio Red Phalarope records occur mid Sept-Dec, and this is far and away the rarer of the two species.
