We look forward to seeing members and guests at the Delaware County Bird
Club meetings and program presentations which take place on the fourth
Monday of each month, September through April except for December when the
meeting falls on Dec. 10 prior to the Delaware Christmas Bird Count. Please
join us in the City of Delaware at the Ohio Wesleyan University, Schimmel-
Conrades Science Center, Room 163. Conversation and refreshments begin at
7:00 PM; the meetings and programs start at 7:30 PM. Parking is available
next to the Selby Stadium on the east side of Henry Street and in the lot
south of the Science Center next to Branch Rickey Arena. We hope to see you
there!

DCBC Program Chair

Amanda Conover, Program Coordinator, for the Ohio Bird Conservation
Initiative will talk about the Lights Out Columbus initiative and share
information about the work of OBCI.

Every spring and fall, millions of birds migrate through Columbus on their
way to or from their breeding grounds. Many birds migrate at night, and
lights on tall buildings or aimed at the sky disorient them and draw them
into the buildings. This causes many birds to strike windows or circle
buildings until they fall from exhaustion. Lights Out programs provide an
opportunity to reduce the number of collision-related kills, and have been
successful in a number of cities across the U.S., including Chicago, New
York, Indianapolis, and Minneapolis. This year, Columbus will initiate its
own Lights Out program thanks to a partnership led by the Ohio Bird
Conservation Initiative and the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. In this
short program, Amanda Conover, Program Coordinator for the Ohio Bird
Conservation Initiative will describe the potential benefits of a Lights Out
program for Columbus, and share the results of a volunteer-based monitoring
program for bird collisions with buildings in downtown Columbus during
spring 2012.
