Hi all,

Ryan Steiner and I birded the southern end of the Crane Creek Estuary (Ottawa NWR) by walking the hiking trails north of the old parking lot approximately one mile. It was well worth the walk! Highlights were 9 species of waterfowl (thousand+) and 12 species of shorebirds including:

HUDSONIAN GODWIT - 5
RED KNOT - 2
Stilt Sandpiper - 11
Long-billed Dowitcher - 1
Black-bellied Plover - ~50
American Golden-Plover - 1
Dunlin - 1 (early)

There was also a probable, but very distant Whimbrel - most likely the continuing injured bird that has been anywhere between the estuary or Metzger over the past couple weeks. A scope is certainly required.

The boardwalk continues to produce including a good variety of warblers. Ryan picked out the continuing GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER early on in the morning right at the west entrance. Other highlights include over a dozen other species of warblers, Blue-headed and Philadelphia Vireos, and my first-of-fall Brown Creeper and Lincoln's Sparrow. Golden-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Dark-eyed Junco numbers continue to grow.

Most of the bird activity is usually at the west entrance around the observation tower and anywhere along the big loop. The south end of the big loop this morning was incredible - I stood there as a half-dozen Cape Mays and several Blackpolls, Black-throated Blues and Yellow-rumped Warblers along with three species of sparrows, Indigo Buntings and more were foraging all over the boardwalk and hand railings. At one point, a Cape May walked within 4 feet of my feet. With the cold temperatures this morning, the birds were really taking advantage of the dogwood berries covering the boardwalk.

Good birding!
