When I worked at Crane Creek State Park I used to regularly bird EHSP in the
fall. All the birds leaving Pelee to island hop are coming ashore in the
area of Marblehead and Catawba. East Harbor has a lot of trails and areas
to cover. The trails leading to the East Harbor boat entrance can be quite
good under the right conditions. I have seen some huge songbird numbers
there. And the sandspit adjacent to the entrance is good for gulls and
shorebirds. The Marina at the end of Route 269 is good for late terns and
swallows. The west harbor trail is another good one. The northwest corner
of Middle Harbor dries up quick and can be good for shorebirds.

This area is also good for migrating raptors. It is as good as anywhere in
Ohio for goshawks when they are moving. I have also done well with saw-whet
owls there. Be prepared for anything. I remember trying to identify a
small group of birds in the top of a cottonwood. When they flew they were
pipits!
