About a month ago I asked this list for opinions concerning a hawk that I
found in Union County. I have written a blog entry for the
American Birding Association using that hawk as an example of one of the
largely unmentioned aspects of bird identification. What is an expert?
What do we mean by certainty? How do we 'confirm' that an individual
belongs to a certain species? I would be very interested to hear
comments with feelings about this subject (as this is more of a philosophical question and perhaps not specifically and directly relevant to Ohio birds and birding, I think any comments should be emailed to me
privately or posted on the blog). The URL is:

Thank you,

Blake Mathys
