On Tuesday October 22 at 9:45 am at least 70+ black vultures departed their evening roosting site in the heart of Garrettsville, Portage County. The focus of the traditional roost is the tall blue water tower in the center of town. When I arrived nearby home roofs and backyard trees were also being used as roosts as well as the water tower. The initial flight did not do the usual circiling, searching, (I suppose), for thermals. They just took off flapping and headed south. At least 70 birds remained at the roost after the initial departure.
At 5:20 pm there were about 20 birds at the roost. A neighbor says for the past couple of weeks there have been 50-70 birds at the roost each evening.
Each fall and spring during the migration this site always has large concentrations of turkey vultures. I hope its not my cooking.

Hi,
As a part of our listserve faceboock discussion I mentioned cameras with
bluetooth capability. However I think there is a better solution to
uploading bird photos in real time. There are micro USB flash card readers
available for under $15. So after you have your shots, remove the memory
card from your phone and put it into one of these and then plug it into
your phone. You can then upload the photo where ever there is data service.
If you use a pre version 5 iPhone I do not know if there is an adapter
available.

Subject: Kelleys Island monthly bird survey - 10/19/2012
On October 19, 2012 we conducted the 15th Kelleys Island October Bird
Survey. Participants included Tom and Paula Bartlett, Dan Best, and Ann
Bugoda. Additional help was provided by Pat Hayes and Jack Hostal. It was
cool, windy, and mostly overcast. The group recorded 55 species along the
normal route and 11,211 individuals. These numbers were above average. Ov=

the 15 years, the October survey has average 54 species and 5735
individuals. New for the October survey were Pied-billed Grebe, Virginia
Rail, Lesser Black-backed Gull, and Great Horned Owl. This brings the

A quick visit to the lower part of this Delaware County reservoir this morning after the rain found cold, windy conditions, plus some migrants. I stopped at New Galena boat launch, the dam, and the beach & visitor's center. Waterfowl season kept waterbirds to a minimum; even the gull flock on the beach was reduced (100 Ring-bills). Landbird highlights included
Flickers - 7-8 in a few hours, an uptick from recent trips
Phoebe - 1 near the visitors' center
Blue Jays - 18-20 was a bit of a pulse, but down from earlier in October
Thrushes - flocks of Robins at every location, along with small #s of E.Bluebirds
Cedar Waxwings - only 1 flock of about 30 birds near the dam
Warblers - nothing but Yellow-rumped, but they were ubiquitous
Sparrows - flocks of Field Sparrows and White-throated Sparrows at all locations. Also had White-crowned at New Galena & the visitors' center, and 1 Lincoln's at the VC.
Blackbirds - little other than a few Redwings and grackles
Finches - a flyby Pine Siskin was at the Visitors' Center, while Goldfinches were widespread.

I went to Villa Angela/Wildwood today from 12:30pm to 3pm.=A0 I ran into Je=
anne Hrenko who was about to leave but stopped to tell me she thought she h=
ad seen a Cape May Warbler up in Villa Angela. So I walked both parks but =
couldn't find it.=A0 It was very windy in parts of Villa Angela.=A0 So as I=
was walking back to my car near Lakeshore I got lucky and found it on the =
west side of Euclid Creek in the large area with trees just down from the n=
orthern tip of the Lakeshore parking lot.=A0 It kept returning to a large l=
ong vine with twiggy stuff on it hanging from a tree and always made a loud=
chip sound before it flew helping to relocate it.=A0 Also, was in the will=
ows and nearby trees but kept moving around.=A0 Otherwise, didn't find much=
unusual today as it was mostly Golden-crowned Kinglets.=A0 There were many=
flitting around the grass today as it had rained earlier.=A0 Here are a fe=

Here's another (free!) low-tech solution: just use your phone to zoom in on
the photo of your camera's photo using the view function, then upload to
get the word out fast. Low quality, but low tech, costs $0 and works well
enough!
