I was checking the results of some invasive species control at our Arcola
Creek Estuary in extreme northeast Lake County this afternoon. The marsh
was alive with sparrows and other songbirds. I was able to find 2 LeConte's
and 2 sharp-tailed sparrows in the marsh. All were in areas of smartweed
and Walter's millet. I saw three additional short tailed sparrows that did
not show themselves again. There was also 1 sedge wren, 2 marsh wrens, 3
soras, and a Virginia rail in the marsh.

When the marsh was sprayed they drove back and forth spraying cattail, and
canary grass, so there are a lot of lanes to walk down. The marsh has some
areas of water, but with knee-highs it is easily manageable. For directions
check out the lakemetroparks.com website.

There were a lot of songbirds all along the lakefront. As others have
reported, lots of yellow-rumped and palm warblers, both kinglets,
white-throated and white-crowned sparrows. I had a single orange-crowned
warbler also. I also had several sharp-shinned hawks moving west along the
lakefront. Lots of vultures too.
