Hi,

In an earlier post I commented that it was "sad" that Ohio rare bird
reports are now showing up on facebook before they do on the listserve.
This comment had a great deal of tongue and cheek, as I am very aware that
things change. We have gone from phone networks to rare bird alert
recordings to pagers to the listserve to mobile in the span of a few
decades.

While fb is great for sharing pictures it does suffer the flaw of not
notifying you when there is something new. You have to go look at fb to
see if there is a new post. On the other hand the listserve, since it is
email based, provides the ability to be notified if you set up your email
to give and audible alert when something new is posted.

All off that said I think we are ignoring twitter as a possible means of
rapidly disseminating information about rare birds in Ohio. Twitter will
give notifications and has the advantage of not requiring a smart phone.
In the past year I have made several attempts to set up a twitter feed
that can re tweet information about Ohio rarities in real time. However I
have found no takers on helping to test this system.

I would be interested in off list correspondence on this topic, especially
from anyone who is a regular twitter user.
