Fellow birders,
Late this afternoon there were 4, perhaps 5 Short eared Owls in the
Rehoboth reclaimed strip mine area just north of New Lexington. They put
on a great show, accompanied by a couple Northern Harriers. Very excited
that they are back where they were seen many times last winter.
Perhaps even more exciting news arrived when a friend showed me a
photo she had taken this morning with her phone of a bunch of "big birds in
a corn field" just east of New Lex. Those big birds turned out to be about
a dozen Sand Hill Cranes, the first this year that I know of in Perry
County. Actually, the first in quite some time.
In review, a very exciting "big bird" kind of day featuring Short
eared Owls, Northern Harriers and Sand Hill Cranes. I'll take it.
