Hi all,

I made a stop at Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve this evening around dusk to check for Short-eared Owls, and was not disappointed. At least four and maybe five owls played Whack-A-Vole in the big meadows. A Northern Harrier harassed rodents up until dusk, when the owls arose, and I saw a dark morph Rough-legged Hawk near the junction of U.S. 68 and Township Rd. 190, about a mile west of the preserve.

Lawrence Woods is on the south side of Township Rd. 190 about a mile east of U.S. 68, and is a few miles south of Kenton in Hardin County. It’s less than an hour from Columbus. Until it gets too dark, excellent views can be had of the owls as they engage in their typical antics. I posted a few photos of the area and owls, along with a map detailing the owl fields and viewing spots on my blog: http://jimmccormac.blogspot.com/
