The Common Mergansers at Pine Lake in southeastern Mahoning County, are continuing their visit, and seem to be increasing in numbers. At about 1PM this afternoon, Sunday, at the extreme south end of the lake, there were no less than 95 Common Mergansers, gorgeous males and more numerous females or juveniles. Some of the other numerous waterfowl present were Hooded Mergansers and Ruddy Ducks. Access for viewing is east off of SR7, just north of the Columbiana County line. Follow Lipply Road east until you reach the water, there is a small parking area on the left. Scope north from this location. As you drive down Lipply Road, notice the Bald Eagle nest above the left side of the road, just before the Firestone tractor tire test center. As has been noted in a previous post, Common Mergansers nest to the south of this site in Columbiana County, on the tributaries of Little Beaver Creek.
