Hi all,

As you likely know, Evening Grosbeaks have been trickling into Ohio and are appearing in small numbers at feeders pretty much statewide. These birds, unfortunately, do not seem to be sticking around very long – often appearing for just a day. But more are likely to follow. In the past two-three days I’ve received the following reports (county and # of birds):

Butler County – 3
Champaign County – 2
Fairfield County - 1
Knox County – 5
Logan County – 5
Noble County – 4

Ethan Kistler, for six years running, had created and kept updated wonderful maps documenting the flights of boreal irruptives, including Evening Grosbeaks, into Ohio. You can see his handiwork, and the current state of various invasions, at: http://www.rarebird.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6841&title=winter-bird-movement-maps-1213

If you would like to see a few photos of some of the recent Evening Grosbeaks – beautiful birds indeed! – Bob Rafferty and Rosalyn Rinehart kindly allowed me to share their pictures on my blog: http://jimmccormac.blogspot.com/ There is also other information about Evening Grosbeaks and their status in Ohio.

Good luck in luring some of these gems to your feeders!

Jim
