I was able to get out and look for waterbirds at a few places in eastern Mahoning Co. over the weekend. Accumulated snow kept me from parking at several of my usual spots, so I probably missed some birds. My birdmobile doesn't have 4-wheel drive, so I played it safe rather than risk getting stuck. The Mahoning R. at Struthers yielded Am. black ducks, ring-necked ducks, buffleheads, 13 c. goldeneyes, hooded mergansers, Cooper's hawk, Am. kestrel, Carolina wren, and Am. tree sparrows. As usual, the river was ice-free. I checked three lakes, all were partly or mostly frozen over. Evans L. held gadwalls, n. pintails, 50 n. shovelers, c. goldeneye, hooded mergansers, 1000+ ring-billed gulls, herring gulls, and e. bluebird. Pine L. had 17 tundra swans, 2 bald eagles, and belted kingfisher. Arrowhead L. had 7 more tundra swans and hundreds of Canada geese. Around my Poland Twp. yard was a Cooper's hawk, red-breasted nuthatch, and Carolina
wrens. A red-shouldered hawk was spotted in Coitsville Twp. Red-shouldered hawks are pretty common in this part of the state. When I lived in Portage Co. from 1980 - 2003, I didn't see/hear nearly as many of them as I do here in Mahoning Co. now. Craig Holt
