Thanks to Ethan and Kathi for passing along this sought-after
information from Facebook. I hope they and other Facebook readers will
forward important information such as this to ohiobirds, where people
who are very interested in important finds in the state have been
learning about them for fifteen years or so.
Yesterday, Andy Sewell and I were casually noting that a flock of cedar
waxwings was perched in a tree when he exclaimed "Wait! The top one is a
Bohemian!" I had lazily turned my attention elsewhere, and just a few
seconds later he continued--"hey, they're *all* Bohemians!" By that time
I recalled a vague impression that those waxwings had looked different:
they were bulkier, not sylph-like as cedars, making their shape seem
less elongated; they definitely were darker overall, their calls were
lower, and the colored feathers on their wings were far more complex in
pattern. There were no cedar waxwings around, and we imagined this flock
had just arrived from crossing the Lake. They seemed to be catching
breath for fifteen minutes or so, and then eagerly converged on the
fruiting ornamental trees out in the parking lot. Let's hope we'll be
seeing more of these exquisite creatures.
